Sheffield Breweries & Brewery Taps

Sheffield breweries and Sheffield beer is quietly the calling card of the city and should arguably be bringing plenty more people in from miles around. The beer crafted in Sheffield benefits from the fantastic water quality of the nearby Peak District which makes for an ideal brew. Sheffielders love their local Sheffield breweries which range from brewers serving up beer around the country through to smaller brewers serving the local area and making a name for themselves as they go. 

Kelham Island pubs are probably what spring to mind when you think of Sheffield’s real ale or craft ale heritage, but there are pockets of beer paradise all around the city with each brewery bringing something different to the table. Here is a list of Sheffield breweries and their brewery taps that welcome dogs.

Abbeydale Brewery

Firmly a Sheffield institution since 1996, Abbeydale Brewery has always kept one eye on innovation and creativity with one eye firmly on heritage, meaning that they really do have something for most tastes.

The brewery itself is located near the Abbeydale Road area, you’ll find their beers in many Sheffield pubs but the best place to sample them would be their own pub, The Rising Sun.

Bradfield Brewery

Bradfield Brewery offers up a taste of tradition from their family run brewery out on a Peak District farm. They’re a Sheffield institution due to their yearly Christmas beer – Belgian Blue. 

Their brewery pubs make for a great post-walk pint due to their locations too.

The Brew Foundation Brewery

The Brew Foundation are a father and son brewing team that have been working wonders with their micro brewery. They distribute their beers over a number of cross-Pennine spots, but the best place to sample their obsession with crafting pale ales right here in Sheffield at the Fulwood and Ecclesall Ale Clubs.

Exit 33 Brewery

Starting back in 2008, Exit 33 are one of Sheffield’s microbreweries that are carving their own name in the city. Crafting beer beers their own way and not tying themselves down too tightly to tradition, their beers have become known for depth and flavour. 

You’ll find their beers in a number of pubs, but Exit 33 are also behind the Harlequin pub down in Kelham Island, where you’ll be able to regularly get hold of their range.

Heist Brew Co.

Heist Brew Co. started life out in Clowne but have recently moved into the heart of Sheffield’s craft beer district – Neepsend. Set up with a new larger brewery and an on-site 30 tap tap room, the only way is up for the brewery. 

Heist brew a wide variety of beers for a variety of tastes, they’ve already had some big collabs with the likes of Triple Point Brewery and more.

Kelham Island Brewery

Kelham Island brewery was originally built back in 1990 in the beer garden of Kelham Island’s famous Fat Cat pub. The brewery nearly closed in recent years but was saved by a local consortium.

Loxley Brewery

Loxley brewery brew all of their beers using water from their on site spring. They’ve been brewing real ales and craft beers since they started in 2018 under the Wiswood Inn pub which boasts one of the largest beer gardens in Sheffield.

Since then they’ve gone from strength to strength and expanded their range.

Neepsend Brew Co.

It feels like Neepsend Brew Co. have been around longer than they have, but they were only established in 2015. Their logo features the Ball Street bridge which was near where they originally brewed. 

They’re stocked in a number of independent pubs and bars, but you’ll always find their beers in the Sheaf, the Blake and the Wellington.

Saint Mars of the Desert

SMOD have been making a real name for themselves over the last few years, which when you realise there’s only two people running it, that is quite impressive. They’re inspired by European brewing of old and actually relocated to Sheffield from America to make their brewing dream a reality. 

Their brewery in Darnall also serves as a little tap room on Fridays and Saturdays. Why not head for a walk along the canal or 5 weirds walk and head down there when things get back to ‘normal’?

The Sheffield Brewery

Growing all the time since they started in 2006, you’ll find the Sheffield Brewery Co. in the heart of Kelham Island where they have an on-site brewery tap and a chosen brewery pub in the popular Gardeners Rest. 

The historic red brick factory building houses one of the UK’s only traditional gravity-fed brewing systems.

Stancil Brewery

Despite being a brewery in Sheffield, it’s actually a Barnsley legend that inspired Stancil. Their brewery came about when they purchased the equipment from closing Oakwell Brewery in order to save the legendary Barnsley Bitter.

Stancil opened in 2014 and relaunched Barnsley Bitter alongside a range of their own crafted ales and lagers.

Tapped Brew Co.

Visitors to the city and Sheffielders alike have all been to sample the beers in the Sheffield Tap next to the train station at some point. The historic surroundings and the vast selection of beers to choose from make it a must-visit for beer lovers. But did you know it’s also a brewery?

Alongside the Sheffield Tap you’ll find the Tapped Brew Co. micro brewery. The brewery looks to follow and serve the same high tastes that their bars always have.

Thornbridge Brewery

Though not strictly a Sheffield brewery (their brewery and official brewery tap are out in Bakewell). Thornbridge is arguably the region’s biggest brewery and they have a host of pubs around Sheffield to enjoy their beer in. 

They began back in 2005 in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall before moving to their purpose-built brewery in Bakewell.

Triple Point Brewing

Triple Point was born in 2018 when a father and son team took over the mini brewery from the outgoing Semtinal brewery. Since then Triple Point have set out creating their own range of beers with a focus on lagers thanks to Sheffield’s fantastic Peak District water. There’s plenty on offer for ale drinkers too.

The brewery is also their bar and has welcomed in local food vendors Twisted Burger Company to round off what is a welcoming bar.

True North Brew Co.

While they’ve only been known as True North since 2016, the group have grown from the Forum opening back in 1992. These days they have their own brewery and Gin distillery to their name and a host of venues to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Recently True North purchased the original recipe to the iconic Stones Bitters and have once again begun brewing to the original spec.

These are just a handful of Sheffield breweries where you can take your dog to sample their beers.
